Today terra firma is used to describe a kind of certainty, safety. Known as “dry land” in sailor’s parlance, the Latin translation is “solid earth”.
Ancient Roman mythology referred to Terra or Tellus (Greek: Gaia) as the personification of earth: literally and honorifically a woman.
Ovid described Tellus as the location of growth, where Ceres (Greek: Demeter), the goddess of agriculture/fertility, was its cause.
Demeter, whose grief over her daughter Persephone’s loss to the Underworld, caused/causes winter.
The poet, Louise Glück wrote of this dynamic; “I think I can remember — being dead. Many times, in winter, — I approached Zeus. Tell me, I would ask him, — how can I endure the earth?”

Each fragrance composition is created to serve as an open prompt, meant to provoke associative leaps and interpretation.
We have refined our identity without relying on logos; designing with restraint. An earthy wax, a pop of color. Labels that disappear into the background — subtle and intentional. Our packaging is 100% recyclable, a small reflection of our desire to leave as little behind.
MAR MAR Los Angeles is partnered with Collective Altadena to raise funds in support of those impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires of January 2025. Beyond immediate relief, we hope this effort contributes to education and long-term infrastructure that can help prevent future devastation.
